Wildlife Bites
Bites by wildlife almost always require evaluation by a medical professional. Unlike most pets, we have no idea where a wild animal has been or what it has been exposed to.
If you are bitten:
Call Animal Control immediately (click here for numbers). Tell them what kind of animal and where it was last seen. If you can safely contain it (close the garage, put a garbage can over it, etc) do so.
DO NOT DAMAGE THE ANIMAL'S HEAD WHILE TRYING TO CONTAIN IT. The head is what is tested.
Contact your doctor or go to the hospital immediately.
If the animal was tested, the health department or the WI State Hygene Lab will follow up with you and/or your doctor with the results.
Bat Bites- If you see a bat in a room with an infant or non verbal adult or any possiblity of someone having been bitten or scratched, call Animal Control immediately. If you can safely capture the bat (see bat page here) place the container in the refrigerator to keep it cool. Do not allow it to freeze. Contact your local health department for further instructions.
