Domestic Animal Bites
Wisconsin requires a bite report and quarantine form be filed on 3 domestic species- Dogs, Cats and Ferrets. This report must be filled out by police and if the animal is current on rabies vaccination, the owner must take the animal for 3 vet exams in 10 days to ensure the animal doesn't have rabies. If the animal is not current, the police or animal control must take the animal to the shelter for the exams. All animal bites that break the skin should be evaluated by medical personel. The biting animal must be contained.
If you are bitten by a dog, cat or ferret, apply first aid then seek medical attention. If it is possible to contain the animal safely, do so. If it is not then do not attempt to. Call your local police and let them know you were bitten. An officer and if available, Animal Control, will respond to your location. Call your doctor and let them know you were bit and if the animal is contained. They will determine if you need to be seen.
It is paramount that the animal to be captured for evaluation.
Once the bite report is finished, it is sent to the health department for tracking and follow up. If the animal was contained and evaluated, you will be notifed of the result.
